All roads lead to Amber...

Stars are brighter

Okay, so I just finished reading the Great Book of Amber on Saturday.  And I have some thoughts on it I need to get out due to deciding to write Amber!verse, as it's temporarily called. Or maybe Chaos!verse. Hmm. I'll call it Amber!verse for the moment.

Okay. So, on the one hand, they ARE ALL SUES AND STUS. Seriously. Not a one who isn't.  *Growls* All the Amberites.  Even Corwin.  *Sighs* Okay.  So I really really liked that Corwin goes after the throne for no reason than to have the throne, and is relatively unlikeable, but has a good heart.  And that he doesn't actually GET the throne in the end.  Merlin, however, is so Stuish it hurts my heart.  ...Uhm.  I actually forget exactly what I was going to say about it.  Except that it has inspired me to write a happy family-all-killing-each-other-fic.  *Noddles* I'm gonna try to make everyone a lot less 'Stuish.  I hope.  Also, having watched a lot of One Piece, I've made some decisions about the characters.

I'm not sure quite what to do. I think that there'll be normal humans, and then some other, immortal-type race (or at least VERY long lived) who might possibly be elves.  *Frowns* Or something. I'm not sure.  And there are two types, too.  Or possibly there ARE no regular humans, or "human" refers to said long-lived-ness? But I want losta history and long bloodfeuds goin', and that requires certain long-lived-nesses.  I'm literally making this all up as I go along.  I'll... uh, go into further detail later, maybe.  In another post.  This is sort of my random, pointless post, apparently.

Except I'm now going to finish about Amber.  Just... the whole thing is BLOODY STUPID. There is NO REASON for most of what happens.  The one thing I really like about it, though, is that there is Order and Chaos locked in eternal struggle (the Logrus and the Pattern), neither is partiuclarly good, and... when Merlin makes his choice, he refuses to choose either, which is SO unusual for fantasy. Refusing Good and Evil, and only being human, if you like.  And, in a way, Corwin's Pattern--uncontrolled by either--is the thing that will keep them balanced, so in a way that's what Merlin chooses--as he should, it's his father's work--and what I love so much is that Corwin created it.  He CREATED the pattern.  He created the other option, the possible extra choice between good and evil. And that's what I love so much about him. Despite his occasional (frequent) Stuishness.

But Corwin and his personality and his goodness despite his... coldness has made me decide that I sort of love those traits.  And thus... Amber!verse, at least until further notice.
